Remove unwanted object in image using Photoshop Layer

This Photoshop tutorial is the first part of Non-Destructive Image Editing with Photoshop Layer tutorial. This part of tutorial will show you how to use photoshop layer and layer mask to remove unwanted object from image by keeping the original content (Non-Destructive Image Editing).

All the tutorial in this series will use 2 example files, TV.jpg and Flower.jpg. You can use the final file that create by following this tutorial with the next part or if you like you can download our finished sample file in each part of the tutorial.

For the tv image we will use non-destructive image editing technique to remove the remote control at the TV’s base.

To editing image using Layer

  1. Open tv.jpg in Photoshop.
  2. Use Rectangular Marquee Tool Marquee Tool to roughly select the area around TV base as shown below.

  3. Press Ctrl(Command) + J to copy the selected area to new layer. [Show Detail]
    Copy the selected area to new layer by press Ctrl(Command) + J or choose menu Layer » New » Layer via Copy.
    This command will copy select area and paste it in to new layer at the original position. You will not notice and change in the image but you will have new “Layer 1″ in Layer Palette.
  4. With "Layer 1" selected, use Free Transform Command to flip the layer and position it at other side of the TV base to cover the remote control. [Show Detail]
    To flip the layer, select “Layer 1″ then press Ctrl(Command) + T or choose menu Edit » Free Transform. Right-click with in transform bounding box and select Flip Horizontal. Then position it to align with other side of TV base. When everything look ok press Enter(Return). See also Using Photoshop Free Transform Command

    Flip New Layer | Position New Layer

Tips: When compose the layer you may need to slightly decrease layer opacity to clearly see the alignment of editing layer and the layer below. Then turn the layer opacity back to 100% when you finish alignment.

  1. Create layer mask to "Layer 1" by hold down Alt(Option) and click at New Layer Mask Button Layer Mask Button.

    This will create layer mask to layer with all invisible (layer mask filled with black). By adding layer mask filled with black to "Layer 1" will hide all area in the layer and now you should see only background layer with remote control.
  2. Select "Layer 1" mask, select Brush Tool Photoshop Brush Tool with relatively large soft round brush. In the photoshop toolbox select white as foreground color. Start drawing around the remote control with white . This will reveal some part of "Layer 1". However, you can also paint in black to hide the area as well. [Show Detail]
    To set soft round brush, choose Brush Tool Photoshop Brush Tool . Select Brush Tip Shape section in Brush Palette Photoshop Brush Palette and use following setting Diameter 60px, Roundness 100%, Hardness 0% and Spacing 25%. See also Using Photoshop Brush Palette.

    Layer with Mask | Layer Mask VIew | Final Image

By using Photoshop Layer and Layer Mask you can edit and compose the image by keeping the original. You can easily discard any change and easily to go back just delete the layer. Now you should have final image and layer list as shown in image below.
