Add Glow to Objects using Layer Mask

This Photoshop tutorial is third part of Non-Destructive Image Editing with Photoshop Layer tutorial. This part of tutorial will show you how to add glow to extracted object using layer mask. Actually, it’s easier to add glow to object using Photoshop Layer Style. But in this tutorial we use layer mask because we like to show you the concept of using and editing the layer mask.

However, adding glow using photoshop layer style may have some difficulty, especially in relatively large file size. And in some situation, using layer mask may give you better control and more flexible than using Photoshop Layer Style. Anyway, if you like you can visit Outer Glow Tutorial at tutorialman.com.

To add object’s glow with Photoshop Layer Mask

  1. Create new layer above "BG" layer and rename it to "Glow". Fill entire layer with white.
  2. Hold-down Ctrl(Command) and click at "TV" layer mask. This will load selection from "TV" layer mask. Now you should have selection surround the TV.

  3. Expand the selection by 10 pixel,. By choose menu Select » Modify » Expand enter 10 pixel.

  4. And apply selection to "Glow" layer mask.

  5. Blur "Glow" layer mask by 10px. By select "TV" layer mask and press Ctrl + A to select all area in the image. Then choose menu Filter » Blur » Gaussian Blur, enter 10 to radius and click OK to apply.

Note: When apply photoshop filter to layer mask with linked layer, you must have some selection in the image otherwise the filter will also effected the image layer. Or you have to unlink the layer mask and its layer by click link icon Linked Layer icon between layer and layer mask.

Now you should have final result as shown above. You can press Ctrl(Command) + D to deselect the selection and save your file as photoshop file(.psd).

Organize the Layer

We are finished editing the TV so in very next step we will compose it with flower image. So lets organized by grouping all TV layer into layer set. The well organized layer set, will allow you to access, edit or move each components of image easier and very important especially file with many layers. for Photoshop CS2 or Earlier:

  1. Click New Layer Button New Layer Icon to create new layer set.
  2. Click and drag all layers one by one and drop it to layer set. Please note that, for the layer with layer clipping, you can drag the main layer to move all the layer in it clipping to drop in to layer set.

for Photoshop CS3:

  1. Select topmost layer you need to add to new layer set. Then hold down Shift key and select bottommost layer. All the layer between will also selected. You can also hold-down Ctrl(Command) and select the layer one-by-one or in some case that the layer are noncontiguous layers.
  2. With all the layers you want to add to new set selected. Click New Layer Button New Layer Icon. You can also drag other layer and drop in to the set later.
