You didn't tell me you OS and i guess you are upgrade from earlier version of photoshop. Mostly this kind of errors are cause form software conflict.

In general you may try to clean up your system by first uninstall all adobe software in your machine. And install only PS and try to use the type tool again.

Anyway this is just a wild guess. For technical problem like this one you might need to contact Adobe support at adobe website, there are a lot of technicians that might know the issues and willing to help you out.
