Saving and Loading Photoshop Brush Set

Photoshop Brush Set is a collection of Photoshop brushes that save in to file for distributing or as a backup. If you want to save brush setting or create new brush please refer to Using Photoshop Brush Palette or Create Custom Brush.

Photoshop brush, like other preset, can be save (export) to a file and use with other machine or you can download custom create brush from Internet and load (import) it to your machine. Normally photoshop will automatically save brush and all other setting in its preference when shutdown, but if it crash or not shutdown properly your brush or other setting will be reset to last save preference.

Note: When you save brush set you will save all the brush along with there setting such as its shape and dynamic, however you cannot save individual brush in to file (not in one single action) – see Organize Photoshop Brushes. When you save brush set you will save entire brush collection that currently load in photoshop will in to one single file. Because Photoshop brush cannot organize in to set, unlike Photoshop action that can be organize save only select action (See also Saving and Loading Photoshop Action).

Brush Palette Menu

To Save Brush Set (Export Brush)

You can save your entire brush that currently loaded by, with in Brush Palette, using palette menu and select Save Brushes… Now photoshop will ask you for the location and brush file name (.abr file) you want to save. Browse to needed location, naming it and click save.

Save Photoshop Brush Set

Actually you can save it anywhere in you machine. But if you want your new set of brush to be listed in Brush Palette menu, that will easier for you to load it back when you need it, you have to save it in Photoshop Brush Preset folder. You have to restart Photoshop to see brush set you just save in the list. Photoshop will use file name as Brush set name in the list so it’s good idea to name it nicely in the way that you can identify it.

To locate brush preset folder:

  • For Windows: Brush Preset folder locate at “Your Photoshop Installed folder\Presets\Brushes”. In general, default install folder for photoshop is “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS2″, if you’re not CS2 user you have to replace “Photoshop CS2″ with your Adobe Photoshop version.
  • For Mac OSX: Brush Preset folder locate at “Your Startup Disk » Applications » PhotoshopCS » Presets » Brushes”

Or you can find you photoshop install folder by using your operating system search application and type in “Photoshop” for a keywords.

To Load Brush Set (Import Brush)

To load brush set to photoshop do one of the following:

  • If your brush file is save in Brush Preset Folder, you can use Brush Palette menu and select your brush set from the list at bottom of the menu. Make sure you have restart photoshop once if you just added you brush file in to brush preset folder.
  • Using Brush Palette menu and select Load Brushes… and browse to your brush file. Photoshop will ask for your confirmation to replace currently loaded brush set, Click OK to replace current brush set with new brush, Click Append to add new brush to bottom of the list of current brush. Or click Cancel if you’re not sure.
  • Using Brush Palette menu and select Replace Brushes… and browse to your brush file. This option Photoshop will not ask you any confirmation and will replace current brush with new brush set you’re selected.
