Turn Your Photo into Cash being Stock Photographer

istockphoto.comHave you ever think about making money from your photos, or even illustrations, flash designs and video clips. To become stock photographer and sell your images never been this easy. At iStockphoto.com anyone can become a contributor to the iStockphoto collection. But there’re also have some requirement to meet quality standard.
All photos at iStockphoto are sell at flat rate depend on download file size that list at table below. To buy royalty free stock you have first purchase credit, that is $12 for 10 credit for minimum purchase. You will receive 20% for each of your image downloaded and up to 40% for exclusivity program, which mean you’re agree to sell your work only to iStockphoto only (see iStockphoto exclusivity program for more information). You can also convert your earning in to credit to buy others stock.

To become iStockphoto contributor

First, You have to be iStockphoto member. This account is standard membership that allow you to purchase credit or download free image of the week. You can create free account with iStockphoto by visit iStockphoto signup page.

Once you become member you have to apply to be contributor. To apply you have to read contributor guideline and take a quiz. If you’re pass, you will ask to send 3 images for approval. You also have to upload a copy of one piece of photo identification (passport, government issued picture ID, or driver’s license) for identification.

For application quiz, I recommend you to at least take a quick scan in all pages in training tutorial, this will greatly save your time. To apply you have to sign-in to your istockphoto account and click upload link at left of page or visit iStock contributor application page here.

To submit your photo, your images have to meet quality standard and some of copyright requirement. And for photo your image must be RGB color mode save in JPEG format and at least 1600×1200 pixel.

After you been through all this process and your images are approve iStockphoto will contact you via email and you now earn benefit form your work.

Quality Standard Guideline

  • Focus: iStockphoto will not accept blur(from camera shake) or out-focus image. Do not submit motion blur, light blur, soft focus images.
  • Lighting: Pictures with poor lighting and other technical error such as reflection hot-spot, harsh shadow, Underexposed/overexposed, lens flare and etc.
  • Noise, Color Distortion & Compression Artifacts: Images with certain amount of noise are not accept and also image with artifacts that cause form high compression jpg images.
  • Over Filtering: There are not accept cross process, overly high contrast or image applied with photoshop effect filter that image quality and detail
  • Isolation & Cropping: Concern of your image clipping mask and sharpness of your image edge. Keep edges clean and smooth, but avoid excessive feathering or jagged edges.
  • Duplicates/Multiple Angles: Same image with different version (ex. b/w , sepia) or Same place with different angles are not preferable.

Please remember that topics that list above are only guideline. You can take a chance to submit any images even blurry one if you feel that your image is unique and stunning. Copyright Requirement:

iStockphoto are quietly strict for this term and have some requirements an regulation. Below is a list of picture that iStockphoto inspectors may not except.

  • Logos & Trademarks:logos, trademarks, company names, product names, product brands or trademarked and patented designs
  • Product design: Most modern toys, many brand name watches, brand name computers and other licensed products.
  • Artwork:Paintings, sculptures, any object in a museum, any object in an art gallery, including public sculpture, some architecture, advertisements, other photography (a photo of a photo).
  • Documents:Modern maps, documents where names are mentioned, computer screens (interfaces and icons are copyrighted).
  • Illustrations: Traced illustrations based on stock photography, fashion editorials, etc, that you do not own the original copyright for
  • Government & Military Property:Agency insignia, military decorations, golden eagles, Presidential seals, flat scans of US currency.
  • Trademarked Buildings, Monuments & Landmarks:The intellectual property laws of this category can sometimes be confusing. It is best to research the structure before uploading it to iStock. For instance, photographs of the Eiffel Tower during the day are legal for resale, but not night shots (showing the light show).

Moreover if in your picture contain an identifiable human face, you will require a model release. (refer to Model Release for more information).

That’s all if you have a bunch of photos you may take some chance to distribute your image worldwide. But remember, even-though iStockphoto have seriously concern about your copyright and have policies to protect your right and your images. But you may consider to embedded your own, this will easier for people to refer to you or your website. iStockphoto not accept any images with embedded visible trademark, logo or watermark, you also have choice to embed invisible one ( see Protect and Copyright your Published Images for more information).
