This specialty point-and-shoot is pricey for an ultracompact, but it lets you take pictures in places where few other cameras can go: underwater. The Olympus Stylus 770 SW is submersible to a depth of 33 feet and will withstand temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s pretty rugged, too: The camera can be dropped from a height of 5 feet and The stainless steel body and reinforced LCD makes the Stylus 770 SW able to withstand up to 220 lbs. of pressure.
Like many Olympus point-and-shoot digital cameras, the 770 SW uses xD memory cards for storage. Unlike the company’s other products, including the Olympus SP-510 UZ, this camera has no problem capturing video on xD. With the SP-510 UZ , you’re limited to just 15 seconds of video unless you use the HxD card. Unfortunately, the Stylus 770 SW’s video is rather jumpy and grainy, largely because it shoots 640-by-480 VGA video at only 15 frames per second. To my eye, footage also looked blurry, and highlights appeared blown out a bit. Another disappointing omission is that the camera has no guide mode to assist you in choosing the right function. At least Olympus included brief descriptions for various scene modes in the menus.
Like its predecessor, the Stylus 770 SW’s price is $400, which is pretty steep for an ultracompact. Still, as specialty cameras go, it’s got little competition. No other point-and-shoot can go 33 feet underwater.
