Reading Photoshop Info Palette

The Info palette displays information about the color values beneath the pointer and, depending on the tool in use, other useful measurements. To display the Info palette using menu Window » Info. You can read the information by using measurement tool, such as Color Sampler tool Eyedropper tool or Measure Tool Eyedropper tool , or while you use other painting or edit tool all of information are shown though Info Palette depend on tool you use.

Color Info. (A)

Info palette will show color information at cursor point up to two color readout in RGB, CMYK, HSB, Web and etc. You can choose information to display by click eyedropper icon eyedropper icon next to color information.

Note:You can set info palette option by using Info Palette menu and choose Palette Option… And in Photoshop CS2 can be set to display Status Information (such as Document size, profile or dimension), and Tool Hints as shown below

When displaying CMYK values, the Info palette displays an exclamation point next to the CMYK values if the color beneath the pointer or color sampler is out of the printable CMYK color gamut. If the color is out of printable color gamut the warning icon Gamut Waring Icon will show.When you use any color adjustment dialog box (for example, Curves), the Info palette displays the before and after color values of the pixels beneath the pointer and beneath color samplers. The first value is original color value and the second value after “/” is color value after adjustment.

Cursor Coordinate (B)

As you move your mouse, Info palette displays the x- and y-coordinates of the pointer position. You can change display unit by click cross-hair icon eyedropper icon

Movement and Transform Info. (C)

Normally this block will show second color read out but if you’re using Move tool , Line tool , Pen tool , or Gradient tool or when you move a selection you can track the exact distance and angle of the change by keep hold-down mouse button while dragging your mouse.

  • X: the change in X (DX).
  • Y: the change in Y (DY).
  • A: the angle (A).
  • D: the distance (D) as you drag.

When you use a two-dimensional transformation command, the Info palette displays

  • W: the percentage change in width.
  • H: the percentage change in height.
  • A: the angle of rotation.
  • H: the angle of horizontal skew.
  • V: the angle of vertical skew.

Dimension (D)

When you use the Marquee tool , Crop tool or Zoom tool the Info palette displays the width (W) and height (H) of the marquee as you drag. The palette also shows the angle of rotation of the crop marquee.

Tip: You can use Marquee tool with Info palette to roughly measure any area in your image. This quite useful when you need to import vector image or render object from 3D application. To know size of import object to maintain quality and sharpness of images with optimal file size. And also avoid unnecessary image re-sample.
